Firstly, it's critical to grasp that solder comes in three main grades: hard, medium, and easy. Contrary to common misconceptions, these terms don't relate to strength—each solder grade offers equal durability. Rather, the distinction lies in the temperature at which each solder melts. Hard solder has the highest melting point, around 820°C, making it ideal for initial joins in ring-making or bezel-setting. By starting your project with hard solder, you create a solid foundation that won't budge or liquefy during subsequent soldering steps.

Next is medium solder, which melts around 760°C. This makes it suitable for attaching elements such as bezels onto backplates after your initial solder joint. Lastly, we have easy solder, melting at an even lower temperature of approximately 680°C to 690°C.
